  • San Pedro village (town?) the country to the north, and the coastal strip westwards.
  • San Pedro is a 'proper' small town, attractive, with very good facilities - shops, schools, commerce, industry. A sought after area. Large projects being constructed between the town and the (excellent) beach.
  • North (Benahavis valley and along the Ronda road) are some excellent golf course urbanisations: Monte Mayor, Los Arqueros (Taylor Woodrow), La Zagaleta (private ex-Saudi royal family estate) and La Quinta. There are also good courses at Guadalmina, Los Flamingos, El Paraiso and Atalaya.
  • Westwards is a mixture of shop 'parades', long established beachside developments, high quality new projects, and remaining still, some natural rolling hills and valleys.
  • "Selwo" is a well-known nature theme park.
  • About 70mins from Malaga airport, 35mins from Gibraltar airport (but there are often border-crossing delays)

San Pedro
Part of the municipality of Marbella, San Pedro de Alcántara originated as a settlement built by the Marquis of Duero in 1860 although ancient ruins near the beach date back to Roman times and the 4th Century. The town, set back from the beach features pleasant plazas, pedestrianised shopping areas and plenty of restaurants and bars, many traditionally Spanish eateries. The old town of San Pedro has a very Spanish feel, with a beautiful main square and traditional Andalucian architecture. There's also a smart promenade and wide sandy beaches. Popular with foreign residents. The innovative new development of Nueva Alcántara, on the sea side of the town, with attractive apartment buildings, an international school and various commercial businesses. The Alcántara Plaza shopping centre, due to open in 2005, will house a large supermarket and multi-screen cinema.

A proposal to provide a sporting marina along the sea front of San Pedro has been well received and looks to be given the go ahead. The facility will comprise 500 berths and will be a boon for boating enthusiasts and will represent a far more attractive alternative to the over crowded Puerto Banus.

The plans to convert part of the main road into San Pedro de Alcántara into an underground highway, which have been blocked since first suggested in the 1980s, may become reality within the next few years. Despite recent disappointment because it appeared that the new central government was not planning to find a rapid solution to the problem, it was announced in June 2004 that funds for the project are to be included in the state budget for 2005. The tunnel will be 1,100 metres long with two lanes in each direction, and should eradicate the long traffic jams for which the entrance to San Pedro is notorious. At present about 50,000 vehicles a day drive through San Pedro along this stretch of the road, where there are three sets of traffic lights. It is hoped that when the construction work is under way, drivers will be able to use the toll motorway free of charge until the tunnel is completed, although this has not yet been confirmed.

Benahavís
Benahavis is renowned for the quality of its numerous restaurants. Sit in the square and sample its culinary delights while serenaded by local musicians. It is however distinctly `touristy' and traditional shops have been swapped for art galleries and boutiques. Like Ojén, it is a popular choice amongst permanent residents in the area.

Benavista
Benavista is located between San Pedro and Estepona and approximately 65kms from Malaga airport. It is easily accessible from the N340 (km 166). Benavista is an area comprising of a number of custom-built urbanisations, predominantly populated by foreigners. It is situated inland, but is only about 3kms from the beach. One of the most popular attractions in Benavista is the Benavista Bowls Club. Benavista Bowls Club is one of the most popular on the coast, has many active members and organises a regular series of tournaments, which attracts players from up and down the coast as well as from abroad. Green fees at Benavista Bowls Club are less the €7.00 and includes bowls hire. Membership costs €6.00, with a €5.00 green fee charge to play. There is also a clubhouse and bar at Benavista Bowls Club. Benavista has its own commercial centre containing a variety of shops including Spar, Iceland, a newsagents, pharmacies, doctors, dentists and a selection of restaurants.
