The Emergency Services
All three emergency services can be contacted on 112
For many people, the reason they move their families to the Costa del Sol is because they feel it is a safe place for them to be in and grow up in. However, it would be wrong to assume that there is no crime in Spain and should you be unlucky enough to be on the receiving end there are police stations in all cities and towns where you can report an incident or ask for help. In Spain, the structure of the police force is vastly different from that in Britain. Rather than just one force there are three all of which have different uniforms. All three branches of police are armed and should be treated with due respect.
Crime/Urban - 091 (Policia Nacional)
Traffic/Rural - 062 (Guardia Civil)
Local Urban - 092 (Policia Local)
National Police - Policia Nacional
Most closely resemble their British counterparts. Their main jurisdiction is that of public safety, criminal investigation, narcotics etc as well as being in charge of the provision of residencies and all other paperwork required by foreign residents.
If you are unlucky enough to be the victim of a crime such as a theft, you should report it to the National Police. They are responsible for crime investigation among other duties. They wear black uniforms and white shirts or blue military style uniforms with a red and yellow badge representing the Spanish flag. The national emergency telephone for the police is 091.
Reporting a Crime - in English
Telephone the Policia Nacional on 902 102 112, then go to any P.N police station to sign the Dununcia.
Guardia Civil
Their main duties area to control the traffic on the roads, rural patrol and the control of guns and explosives. They can easily be recognised by their green uniforms.
Local or Town Police - Policia Local
Local police devote most of their time to traffic control. It is not unusual to be stopped when driving in southern Spain. You will need to show your driving licence, photo identification, documents relating to the car and valid insurance. It is an offence not to carry these documents whilst driving in Spain. Each force operates within its own municipal boundaries and is a unique corps. Their duties are mainly centred around road traffic and public disorder offences. Their uniform is very similar to the National Police, without the badge.

Should you need an ambulance whilst in Spain, the emergency number to call is 061
If you are a Social Security patient in Spain you will not be charged for ambulance services. Likewise if you have insurance, your insurer will reimburse your costs. Most private hospitals and clinics also provide 24-hour ambulance services. By law, taxis are also required to transport a medical emergency to hospital if requested to do so.
