Nursery Schools and Kindergartens
There are many options available to those wishing to find care for younger children. English nurseries, Spanish nurseries and a whole range of international and bilingual nurseries offer care ranging from supervised play to a structured pre-school curriculum. Most will state that their primary aim is the individual creative development of each child and many appear to provide a high level of care.

Whether you want to send your children to a Spanish nursery or a private nursery with English as the first language is entirely up to you. For a Spanish state nursery, children will have to live in the appropriate catchment area and be registered at the local town hall. Most nurseries are open from 0800 to 1800. Fees and registration requirements differ from nursery to nursery. Full-time education in Spain is not compulsory until the child is 5.

By law all nurseries must be registered and all staff should hold some form of childcare qualification. In fact many Spanish carers have achieved a Bachelors degree in infant education. The level of nursery care is often very high.

Visiting a number of nurseries is advisable before enrolling your child. Meet the staff, ask about the provision of healthy food and how your child will be disciplined. Ask how often children paint, dress up, draw, sing, dance, model and be aware that for the day to be stimulating and rewarding for your child activities must change regularly. Check staff-to-child ratios which, if low, may affect the level of consistent, relaxed, quality care your child receives. Make sure that during opening hours your child will be priority number one.

Primary and Secondary Education
For families intending to make their home in Spain, state education is free but it is only conducted in Spanish. However, this does not seem to present a problem for young children who tend to pick up the language quickly. Attending a Spanish school is definitely one of the best ways of ensuring that both the child, and in most cases, the family, become integrated into the local Spanish community. It is often a good idea for the family and especially the children to have some Spanish lessons prior to coming to Spain.

Spanish schools can be state or private. If you want to send your child to a state school, just like in England, it’s your catchment area that matters. Most schools in Spain finish at 2pm. Private schools will tend to finish later, say 4pm. The subjects covered are very similar to the UK with English of course being taught as a foreign language, but in terms of sports they play a lot more handball and basketball. The school holidays are also a lot longer in Spain. In summer the children get three months holiday.

In order to get your child into a Spanish school, you will need all the necessary paperwork, proof of residency [usually in the form of proof of address], certificate of Empadronamiento, the child’s full birth certificate, passport, photos, and immunization record etc. In the Spanish state system school starts at the age of 6. At 16 students are awarded a 'titulo do graduado escolar' certificate and many will then stay to study for their "baccalaureate" which leads to University entrance. Those pupils that have not completed the four years or are less academic are awarded a school certificate and they can then go onto attend a vocational school [formacion profesional].

In Spain, children must attend the school closest to where they live, so if you decide to live in an area full of British Ex-pats, you’re likely to find plenty of British children in the local school. In order to cater for the increasing number of ex-pats, the education authorities in Spain are building new state schools and in highly populated ex-pat areas, schools are now offering "immersion" programmes for those children who speak little or no Spanish. These programmes help the pupils adapt to their new lives in Spain and are well balanced with lessons which develop their full potential. There is a school to suit your infant, child or teenager - you just need to know where to look!

International [Primary - Secondary] Schools
If your child is older or in the middle of a GSCE or A level course, it may be advisable to consider an International School. Fees for day students are usually cheaper than in the U.K. These schools also tend to offer qualifications better known to UK universities. Some schools offer a system of English and Spanish curricula which enables students to be qualified for either Spain or the UK.

There are an increasing number of international schools in the Costa del Sol some which follow the British GCSE and A level system, some the American education system and others which follow the International Baccalaureate. All schools will still teach a small part of the Spanish curriculum alongside their chosen route. Fees vary so always check beforehand.

The National Association of British Schools in Spain was founded in 1978 to promote, uphold and defend British education in Spain. One of its most important functions is to maintain contacts with the British Council, the cultural arm of the British Embassy, and with the Spanísh Educational authorities in order to satisfy the requirements of Spanish legislation referring to foreign schools in Spain.

Visit the National Association of British Schools in Spain website www.nabss.org for more information. Those schools** which are full members of the Association have been authorised to impart a British education in Spain.

Language Schools
Most towns have a selection of language schools to choose from. Your child may benefit from extra Spanish tuition to aid integration into their local Spanish school or to help them communicate with their Spanish neighbours and playmates. Private tutors advertise their services in the local press and may prove the better option as they will generally travel to your home and teach on a one to one basis.
